This paper focuses on urban sociolinguistics and the city. It highlights the dynamics of urban speech among residents of two municipalities in Oran, based on an exploratory study using semi-structured interviews.
In this context, this study focuses on two neighbourhoods within the urban area of Oran: firstly, the Belgaïd urban centre, located in the municipality of Bir El Djir, within the Oran-East conurbation; and secondly, the Bahi Amar housing estate, situated in the municipality of Es-Senia, within the Oran-West area.
This research therefore examines the socio-linguistic dynamics of urban speech among speakers from the urban neighbourhoods of Oran, with a view to analysing the elements inherent in their language use, describing the features that characterise their language, and understanding the languages they use for communication and the linguistic features that make up their linguistic repertoires.
In other words, this study aims to analyse data collected from interviews with our target population in order to conduct an analytical study based on their educational levels, language profiles and language use in both formal and informal contexts. At the same time, we pay particular attention to the interviewees’ perceptions of language, with a view to describing the socio-linguistic dynamics of the urban speech of the communities under study.
