Films Shape Collective Memory and National Identity: Historical Events in Film

Abstract

Viewers' recollections and sense of national belonging are shaped by historical films. Hollywood historical depictions are powerful tools for shaping social narratives because they captivate huge audiences with a mix of factual facts and dramatic storytelling. The effects of cinematic portrayals of pivotal historical events on public understanding and identification with those events are the focus of this research. These events can include revolutions, civil rights campaigns, or wars. the challenges faced by filmmakers in attempting to be historically accurate while also expressing their creative sides, and the impact that their choices have on the collective consciousness of the country. The impact of cinema on viewers' perceptions, interpretations, and internalizations of both their own and other societies' histories is investigated in this study through a comparative analysis of several historical films. Finally, this study sheds light on the ways in which film can both alter and maintain historical narratives, shedding light on the ways in which cinema impacts collective memory and national consciousness.
