Women Artists in Modern India: Contributions, Challenges, and Recognition

Abstract

Women artists have played a significant role in shaping the development of modern Indian art by contributing diverse perspectives, innovative artistic practices, and powerful representations of gender, identity, culture, and social change. From the pioneering works of early twentieth-century artists to the experimental practices of contemporary creators, women have expanded the boundaries of artistic expression through painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation art, digital media, performance art, and interdisciplinary practices. Despite their substantial contributions, women artists have historically encountered numerous barriers, including gender discrimination, limited access to formal art education, unequal opportunities for exhibitions, underrepresentation in museums and galleries, restricted institutional support, and inadequate recognition within mainstream art history. These structural inequalities have often limited their visibility and professional advancement despite the quality and significance of their artistic achievements.
