Roman Religious Structures in the Archaeological Site Tipaza

Abstract

Tipaza is an ancient and historic city with a rich cultural heritage. It was part of the Roman province of Mauretania Caesarea and is considered one of the most important ancient cities on the Algerian coast. It is an example of a complete Roman city with a central layout based on main axes that cross the city via two streets, intersecting at the Forum around which most of the architectural structures are concentrated. Through this study, we seek to highlight the Roman religious structures found in the ancient city of Tipaza. We examine the location of these structures and their history, reviewing the various designs that reflect the religious and ideological diversity that prevailed in the city during the Roman period, from the sacred pagan temples of the gods to the Christian basilicas.
