Abstract

Growing concerns about environmental sustainability, resource use, healthcare costs, and the long-term impact of modern consumption have increased interest in sustainable and natural approaches to health. Ayurveda, a traditional Indian system of health knowledge, includes practices involving lifestyle, diet, medicinal plants, preventive health, and traditional forms of self-care. This paper examines Ayurvedic approaches to sustainable and natural healthcare, focusing on traditional knowledge, medicinal plants, preventive lifestyles, local resources, dietary practices, low-resource wellness practices, environmental awareness, sustainability challenges, and contemporary integration. Ayurveda can contribute culturally meaningful perspectives on prevention, healthy living, plant-based knowledge, and responsible use of natural resources. However, natural healthcare should not automatically be assumed to be environmentally sustainable or medically effective. Increased demand for medicinal plants can place pressure on biodiversity, while poorly regulated products may create safety risks. The paper argues that Ayurveda can contribute to sustainable healthcare discussions when traditional knowledge is combined with conservation, quality control, evidence-based evaluation, ethical sourcing, and appropriate professional healthcare.
