Abstract

Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds produced by aromatic plants. Their chemical composition commonly includes monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, oxygenated terpenoids, and other volatile constituents, with composition varying according to plant species, tissue, geography, cultivation, harvesting, and extraction conditions. Their characteristic aromas and chemical activities have made essential oils important in food flavoring, fragrances, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, household products, agriculture, and other industries. This paper examines nine major dimensions of essential oils, including chemical composition, biosynthesis, extraction methods, analytical characterization, quality variation, biological properties, food and fragrance applications, pharmaceutical and agricultural uses, and safety and future industrial opportunities.
