The Problem of Terminological Multiplicity in Critical Discourse -Displacement as a Case Study-

Abstract

This article examines the problem of critical terminology in Arabic critical discourse by addressing its concept, significance, and function in the construction of critical knowledge, the definition of concepts, and the regulation of procedures for analyzing literary texts. It also investigates the ways in which critical terms are formed and transferred from one context to another. In addition, the article highlights the phenomenon of terminological multiplicity in Arabic literary criticism and the problems arising from the diversity of theoretical references and methodologies, as well as from differences in translation and Arabization practices. These factors have resulted in variation in the definition and use of concepts. To illustrate this problem, the article takes displacement (al-inziyaḥ) as a case study. Displacement is one of the critical and linguistic terms that has acquired numerous designations and Arabic equivalents, while its meanings have varied according to the theoretical contexts in which it has been used. Through this case study, the article seeks to identify the manifestations and causes of terminological multiplicity and to examine its effects on conceptual stability and the unification of critical discourse. It ultimately emphasizes the need for conceptual precision and terminological consistency when terms are transferred, formulated, and used in Arabic criticism.
