The Reception of Integrated Pragmatics in Arab Culture

This study titled The Reception of Integrated Pragmatics in Arab Culture belongs to Arabic pragmatic linguistic discourse. It aims to interrogate the foundations on which Abu Bakr al-Azzawi built his critical judgment, given that he is one of the pioneers of integrated pragmatics in the Arab world, by engaging in a critical dialogue with his book Discourse and Argumentation. In that book he sought to demonstrate the argumentative character of all texts and discourses produced through natural language, and to show that the difference between texts and discourses lies only in the manifestations of argumentation, its nature, and its degree. He drew on the conception of argumentation advanced by Ducrot and Anscombre, which consists in tracking the argumentative force of utterances as bound to the orienting mechanisms embedded in the structure of discourse. This conception is on the verge of moving argumentation out of the sphere of philosophical theories of language and into the field of precise linguistic scientific practice. On this basis I will trace the foundations relied upon by the researcher in establishing the argumentative character of texts and discourses by drawing on the aims of the book, its methodological framework, the nature of the corpus proposed for applying this methodology, and the specific qualitative character of the analysis.
